  • Occupational Therapy evaluations and treatment for the sole purpose of addressing driving are currently not covered by insurance. However, we do recommend checking with your insurance provider about possible reimbursement.

State funding may be available for certain clients (e.g., Mass Rehab Commission, Cecropia).

For those with neurological conditions, we encourage you to reach out to your local association to inquire about financial assistance.

  • A doctor’s order is required prior to scheduling and serves as our permission to provide Occupational Therapy services.

  • Upon completion of the comprehensive evaluation, which may or may not include an on-road assessment, a recommendation regarding your driving ability will be made.

This may include: continuing or returning to driving as usual, modifying driving routines (e.g., avoiding highways or only driving in familiar areas), participation in OT/PT prior to re-assessment, driving lessons/training, or driver retirement.

In the event that driver retirement is recommended, counseling for use of alternative transportation resources will be provided.

  • Results with be shared with your referring provider and any other providers that you request. In the event that we recommend driver retirement, we reserve the right to report to the RMV.

  • You do not need an active driver's license to participate in the in-clinic Clinical Driving Evaluation or a Readiness to Drive Evaluation.

You will need an active driver's license or permit to participate in any Clinical In-Vehicle Evaluations or training. If your license has been suspended for medical reasons, we will guide you through the process of obtaining a permit if appropriate.

  • Our vehicle is equipped with an electronic left foot accelerator, various hand controls, steering devices and pedal extensions.

  • Not right away. Once we have completed the initial evaluation and determined appropriate needs, the client will then undergo training conducted over several lessons to become proficient in use of the equipment. Once this is complete, an RMV road test will be required to become a licensed operator of a vehicle with adaptations. When an individual passes the road test, a “prescription” detailing the adaptations is written by the OT/Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) that has been servicing you to then be sent to the vehicle modifier for installation.

  • Our adapted vehicle, the one that you will be using for all your training, will be available to sponsor your RMV road test.

  • Once the vehicle modifier completes the installation, a vehicle check-out with all the parties included (the client, the prescribing OT and the vehicle modifier) will meet to ensure the modifications are installed as requested and that the client is able to safely use. Once this occurs, the process is then complete.
